The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada's largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, as well as one of the world's leading research centres in the area of addiction and mental health. The Institute for Mental Health Policy Research (IMHPR) is home to leading scientific experts dedicated to informing policy and practice on mental illness and substance use disorders. IMHPR scientists conduct collaborative research on communities, populations, health systems and global health, and develop and evaluate prevention and intervention initiatives to reduce mental health and substance use challenges. IMHPR is seeking an Independent Scientist who conducts social, epidemiological, policy and/or health systems research on mental health and/or substance use/addictions, with expertise in one of IMHPR’s three main areas of concentration: 1) healthcare performance, including the examination of health services data and associated costs as well as economic evaluations of health care interventions to inform health system improvements for people with mental illness and/or substance use problems/addictions; 2) population mental health monitoring and/or global mental health through population health research and data analytics/modelling to inform policy and practice; or 3) community-based research with a focus on interventions, prevention and treatment to improve community mental health/addictions. The candidate will have extensive knowledge regarding mental illness and/or substance use/addictions at the population level, to inform evidence based prevention and health system improvements. The candidate will have experience collaborating with researchers and clinicians from diverse disciplines and conducting interdisciplinary research that informs policy and practice.

The scientist will be responsible for submitting scientific publications for peer-review, applying for and obtaining research funding from external granting agencies, disseminating findings to academic and other stakeholders, and establishing partnerships with other research groups and internal and external stakeholders. The scientist may be responsible for leading and supervising a research team as well as research trainees. This includes working collaboratively with other research groups and community stakeholders. This position is currently located at 33 Ursula Franklin Street, Toronto, Ontario.


Qualifications:

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in social or health sciences (e.g., Epidemiology, Psychology, Health Services Research) with a focus on mental health, including substance use disorders and addictions. Preference will be given to researchers who have extensive experience conducting complex data linkages with healthcare utilization data to inform health system improvements. An excellent publication record and proven aptitude in writing first authored peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals is required. The candidate must have demonstrated success in obtaining externally funded competitive grants. They must have a demonstrated ability in the design, management and execution of high quality research projects. Strong skills in the management and analysis of quantitative and/or qualitative data, the use of advanced analytic software (R, Mplus, STATA, SAS), and report writing are required. The application of gender-based analysis plus (GBA+) framework to mental health and the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status is considered an asset. Of particular interest are applicants whose research focuses on mental health among marginalized, racialized, and/or Indigenous communities as well as researchers who engage people with lived experiences in the research process, with a view to enhancing patient-centred, measurement-based care. The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and the scientific community is required along with an ability to work with decision makers and diverse community partners in knowledge mobilization activities. The candidate must be able to lead and work effectively within an interdisciplinary team and interact comfortably with diverse community partners while conducting their own independent research. The ability to work with individuals of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is required. Bilingualism (English/French) and/or proficiency in a second language are considered assets.
